OBITUARY: Howard Co. Times, Cresco, Iowa, December 3, 1930, P 5, C1.
Samuel Smith was born March 18, 1856, at Freeport, Ill. In June of the same year his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Smith, moved to Albion township, Howard county, Iowa, taking up a homestead on a quarter section now owned by Albert Weinkauf. The old stone house, in which he lived, until his marriage to Lillian C. Howe Oct. 26, 1884, is still standing. The cemetery on the hill where interment was made is a part of the original homestead. He was a carpenter by trade. Nearly all of his life was spent in Albion twp.
He passed away Nov. 27, 1930, at the age of 84. Two children preceded him. He is survived by his now widowed companion, three sons and two daughters; Jennie of Los Angeles, Alfred, Nellie and Edwin of Albion and Wesley of Cresco; seven grandchildren, 2 brothers, Albert of Bonair, Andrew of Brainerd, Minn., and three sisters: Jane of Dexter, Minn., Ida of Black Hills, S.D., and Mary of Bonair. Many sympathizing friends attended the services which were conducted in the home Sunday at 2 p.m. Rev. A.W. Schlesselman officiated.
