WALTON.
Joseph Walton was born in Sutton, St. Edmunds, Lincolnshire, England, January 1, 1830, and died January 1, 1913, at his home in Cresco, Iowa.
He was married to Harriett Howard, of Walpole, Norfolk, St. Peter, England, in 1851. They remained in England some three years and then came to America locating in Illinois, and late in 1856 they removed to Iowa, settling on a farm in Orleans Township, Winneshiek County, four miles east of Cresco. Here this worthy couple spent about thirty years of their lives in unceasing labor and by careful saving accumulated a very comfortable fortune, Mr. and Mrs. Walton are well known far and near for their genial, generous, hospitable nature. Both seemed happiest when able to give or do something to friend or neighbor, always ready to help a friend less fortunate than themselves.
To this union were born six children; one son and one daughter (Charles Walton and Mrs. Mary Johnston) preceding the father to that Better Land; the surviving members are his wife, Mrs. Harriett Walton, James Walton, of Monticello, Minnesota, John Walton and Mrs. Nellie Hanson, of Cresco, Iowa, and Mrs. Lizzie Christen, of Decorah, Iowa.
Mrs. Walton and family, the sister Mrs. Howard and family, have the sincere sympathy of a host of warm friends in this their sad bereavement.
The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal church by Rev. B. W. Soper. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
