Death of Rev. J. L. Paine.
The Fayette Reporter of Dec. 5th contains a sketch of the life of Rev. J. L. Paine, who at one time was pastor of the Cresco M. E church, who passed away at Fayette on Nov. 30th at the age of 74. He was born in Ohio, moved with his parents to Wisconsin and in 1355 came to Fayette. He was a graduate of U. I. U. in the class of 1862. His first appointment was to a circuit 150 miles long in the territory of Dakota, residing at Ft. Brule. Failing eyesight caused his retirement from the ministry for several years, during part of which time he took and filled the contract for furnishing piling for the construction of the old Davenport & Northwestern Ry. between Fayette and Cresco. Recovering his sight he re-entered the ministry and in 1876 was assigned to the Cresco pastorate where he served two years. During his stay in Cresco he conducted a temperance revival which closed the Cresco saloons. For a more complete obituary see http://iagenweb.org/boards/fayette/obituaries/index.cgi?read=390293
