Our community was again saddened Monday last by the death of A. Handke at the home of Minnie Porter at Cresco. Arnold Handke was born in Germany, in June, 1854, and came to this country when quite young. He came to Kendallville in 1881, where he worked in the mill for a number of years and then took up work on the cream route, where he has since worked. In 1887 he was married to Carrie E. Handke. To them were born six children, Robert, Elsie, May, Flossie, Frances and Ruth, who with the mother are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. He also leaves one brother and two sisters. Mr. Handke was taken seriously ill last November with a lung trouble from which he never recovered. About three weeks ago he with his wife went to Cresco to spend a few days at the home of Mrs. Handke’s cousin, Minnie Porter, and was taken worse there. All that loving hands and medical skill could do was done for him. He was a loving husband and father a kind neighbor, always ready to help any in need, and will be greatly missed in our community. The family have our sincere sympathy. The funeral was held at the Porter home in Cresco. Dr. Parker of Fayette officiated. The Modern Woodmen of which Mr. Handke was a member took charge of the funeral. The interment was made in Oaklawn cemetery.
