HALLIDAY.
Robert Halliday was born near Belfast, Ireland, June 4th, 1823. There he grew to manhood and on Jan. 10th, 1849 he was united in marriage to Jessie Purdie. The same year they sailed for America and made their home for a time in Newark, N. J. During the year 1867 they moved westward with the tide of immigration, settling in New Oregon. Later they came to Cresco where Mrs. Halliday died about twelve years ago.
For thirteen years prior to the erection of our present high-school building, Mr. Halliday was the painstaking janitor of the old building. Hundreds who have gone out from our public schools and many who still remain, hold Grandpa Halliday in loving remembrance.
At his funeral a large choir of girls from the school rendered the music.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Halliday, three of whom are still living and were present at the funeral. Mrs. Anna L. Sheard, of Cathay. N. D., Andrew of Jamestown, N. D., and Wm. M. of Cresco, with the latter of whom Mr. Halliday made his home the last year of his life.
Funeral services conducted by Rev, Gammons were held from the Congregational church, Thursday, at 2 o’clock. Burial was in Oaklawn.
