Melvin J. Henkes, age 89, of Cresco, IA, died Wednesday, December 25, 2019, at Accura Healthcare of Cresco.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, IA, with Father Jacob Rouse officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery Cresco, IA. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 30, 2019 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the time of service Tuesday at the church.

Melvin John Henkes was born in Howard County, IA, on September 10, 1930, son of Harry L. and Esther J. (Herold) Henkes. He graduated from Cresco High School. He worked on the family farm until enlisting in the Army in 1955. He was honorably discharged in February of 1957. On January 27, 1962, Melvin married Marlene May Murray at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA. The couple lived in Independence about a year, and in 1963 moved to a farm in the Cresco area. Melvin took pride in raising hogs on pasture. After his retirement, Melvin enjoyed many fishing trips with his brother-in-law and good friend Ron Weis. The two traveled to and fished in Costa Rica, Alaska, and Canada.

He is survived by his children; Pamela (David) Daley of Cresco, IA, Jeffrey Henkes of Ankeny, IA, Russell Henkes of Cresco, IA; grandchildren Jennifer Daley Oakes of Spring Grove, MN, Matthew (Erin) Daley of Cresco, IA, Brett Daley of Cresco, IA, Jordan Henkes, Ty Henkes, and Caden Henkes all of Ankeny, IA; great grandchildren Blake Murphy, Jarrett Oakes, Silas Oakes, Ava Daley, Liam Daley, and Preston Daley; sisters Verna Dralle and Charlotte Henkes both of Mason City, IA; sisters-in-law Sandra (Chuck) Lange of Fayetteville, AR, Marcia (Dan) Moyle of Lamont, IA, and brother-in-law Milo (Helen) Murray of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marlene on May 11, 2009, brother Harold and sister-in-law Mildred Henkes, sisters Sister Lea Henkes and Shirley and brother-in-law Ronald Weis, and brother-in-law Darold Dralle.
