Joseph Schaefer, after an illness of several weeks with a complication of diseases, coupled with the infirmities of old age, passed away at his home in Cresco on Tuesday afternoon and was buried yesterday morning, the funeral being at St. Joseph’s church, Father Wagner officiating. Mr. Schaefer was an old resident of the county and prominent among his nationality and with those of his religious faith.

SCHAEFER.
Joseph Schaefer was born August 26, 1831, at Bairishe, Ptaltz, Germany, and died at his home in Cresco, Iowa, December 13, 1910, at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 18 days.
In 1851 he left his Fatherland, crossed the ocean in a sail boat, the trip continuing 103 days on water. He remained in York State one year, then went to Freeport, Ill., the journey being made from Albany to Chicago by rail and canal, from Chicago to Freeport by foot. He remained there till 1854, and then returned to Germany. After the death of his father, in the same summer, he returned to America, bringing his mother, three sisters and three brothers with him to Freeport, Ill., and in the fall of 1854 they emigrated with an ox team to Iowa, and arrived at Cottrel’s Ford in New Oregon township, March 7, 1859. He was married to Thresa Huber of Winnesheik{sp} county, and settled on the old homestead, four miles south of Cresco. Ten years ago he moved to Cresco where he has since lived. He leaves to mourn his loss two sons and three daughter, all of whom were present at the funeral except one daughters. He also leaves one sister in Oklahoma and one brother now in California.
Services were held from St. Joseph’s Church, requiem high mass being sung by Rev. Father Wagner, who paid a touching tribute to the life of the deceased. The remains were followed to St. Joseph’s cemetery by a large concourse of relatives and friends.
