P. J. McCullow passed away rather unexpectedly at an early hour on Thursday morning, from an attack of pneumonia, after an illness of but a few days, from which he was thought to be recovering up to a few hours before his death. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning from the Church of the Assumption.

Transcriber’s Note: Iowa Gravestone Photos indicate he was born in 1844 and is buried in Calvary Cresco Cemetery. The year of birth varies from the obituary.

MC CULLOW.
P. J. McCullow was born in Philadelphia March 22, 1843. He came to Iowa in 1856, locating in Afton twp., Howard county, where he worked for the late Augustus Beadle. He served one year and ten months in the Union army during the Civil war, enlisting Oct. 8th, 1863. His first active service was with Gen. Sherman in the Meriden expedition from Vicksburg, Feb. 3, 1864. From that time till he was mustered out at Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 8, 1865, he participated in 24 battles. He was honorably discharged from the service at Davenport, Iowa, Aug. 24, 1865. After the war he returned to Howard county. He was married Nov. 5, 1873, to Catherine Burke. Five children were born to them, two of whom Charles and Nellie, with their mother survive. Deceased is also survived by two brothers and one sister, Charles of Elma, Frank and Mary of Charles City. Mr. McCullow worked at his trade of cooper for a number of years in Cresco. Later he was manager of the Wilbur Lumber Co.’s yards in Cresco. At the time of his death which occurred Nov. 10, he was serving as city clerk, a position which he held since the death of his comrade Philip C. Howe.
