Sorrow Comes to Former Cresco Girl.
The Cresco friends of Mrs. R. P. Hampton, nee Ruby Watros, were grieved to learn of the death of her husband which occurred in Sioux City June 17th, following an operation for appendicitis. Mr. Hampton went to Sioux City about six weeks ago to take charge of the Bell Telephone Co.’s business as district manager, and had been in the employ of the company about a year and a half at Muscatine. Mr. and Mrs. Hampton had taken a cottage at Riverside park where they intended to spend the summer after which they expected to move into town. Until four days before the operation he made no complaint of his illness. The attack came suddenly and Mr. Hampton was removed to a hospital, where an operation was performed. He sank rapidly.
He was a prominent man in the telephone business in Iowa and came to Sioux City highly recommended. He served in the Spanish-American war and spent a great deal of time in Cuba and Porto Rica when the war was being fought. He was a member of the Spanish American War Veterans' association.
Mr. Hampton was 36 years old He was married to Miss Ruby A. Watros Jan. 4, 1909, and the young couple made a visit to Cresco after their wedding, and he made a good impression on the people that he met here. During the brief time that he was with the telephone company he had received several promotions and was in line for another promotion in a short time.
The funeral was held at the home of Mr. Hampton’s parents in Rock Island, III. A number of the Bell Telephone Co. officials attended and a handsome floral piece in the form of a bell was the company's tribute to its faithful employe. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. A military salute by the Spanish-American war veterans was an impressive tribute to their dead comrade.
Mrs. Elizabeth A. Watros was called to Rock Island by wire, and she with her son, Dr. R. A. Watros of Davenport, met the remains when the funeral party arrived from Sioux City. Mrs. Watros remains a few days to be with the children and family of the deceased.—Times.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a grave shows he is buried in Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island, IL and that he was born March, 1874.
