OBITUARY
The people of Elma are again called to grieve for one of their oldest pioneers. Lodema Ann Smith was born in Erie Co., Penn., Oct. 16, 1834. She lived near Westleyville principally until the spring of 1857 when she was united in marriage with Willis Mead. In March, the same year, they moved to Fayette Co., Iowa, where they resided until the year 1868, when they moved to this county. Six children blessed this union, five of whom are left to mourn the deceased. Her husband died in 1892 and this was a sad blow to the woman but she bore her cross and did her Lord’s will. Mrs. Mead was a devoted member of the Methodist church of Elma and beloved by her neighbors and friends whose privilege it was to know her intimately. She has been a sufferer because of physical infirmities for several years, but for the past few months she, though a great sufferer, was patient through it all, and although loving hands did all they could for her ’twas of no avail, and the tired spirit passed to rest about 10 o’clock a. m , Tuesday. Deceased is mourned by two daughters, Mrs. P. N. Dwello, of State Center, and Mrs. W. E. Doan, of Hopkinton, Iowa, and three sons, E. J. Mead, of Paynesville, Minn., W. W. Mead, of Medford, Okla., and C. A. Mead, of this place. The funeral took place from the Methodist church last Thursday. The services were conducted by Rev. Wyant. Interment was made in the local cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in Howard Cemetery.
