OBITUARY.
The grim reaper, Death, has again visited our community and this time has taken not only one of our oldest, but one of our best known and respected pioneers, Mrs. John Higgins.
Mary Cashman Higgins was born in County Cork, Ireland, February 2, 1835, and died September 1, 1909. When she was 14 years old she moved with her parents to Memphis, Tennessee, and resided there 2 years, when they moved to Dubuque.
She was married in 1858 to John Higgins in Dubuque and lived there until 1863 when with her husband she moved to Howard County where she has since resided.
Mrs. Higgins, although in ill health for the past winter, had been enjoying good health for the past few weeks. On Wednesday evening, about 6 o’clock, she was taken suddenly ill and died in a few minutes.
Mrs. Higgins was a modest, unassuming woman whose greatest joy laid in doing good to those around her. Her life is one that will be remembered by her many friends and sadly missed in the home circle, for it was one of kindness and unselfishness.
We will miss her genial smile, her church will mourn a devoted member, its good work a staunch and generous supporter, and everyone a warm hearted, sympathetic friend.
To her family we turn with heartfelt sympathy, but they mourn not without hope for she has only gone before and an eternal reunion awaits them. The memory of her upright, unselfish life is a blessing to them even in their sorrow and an incentive to them to follow in her footsteps and remember: “Blessed are they that die in the Lord.”
She is survived by her aged husband, John Higgins, four daughters, Mrs. Frank Marr, of Riceville, Mrs. Den. Kennedy and Mrs. Knapp, of Elma, and Kate; three sons, Tom, John and Mike; five brothers, Thomas, John and Mike Cashman, of Elma, William Cashman, of Lowther, and Jerry Cashman, of Riceville, and two sisters, Mrs. Tom Whelan, of Canton, Minn., and Mrs. Kate O’Connell, of Elma.
The funeral was held from St. Patrick’s church at Cecelia on Friday morning. Despite the inclement weather, the throng that filled the church was ample proof of the esteem in which she was held. Her five brothers and one cousin, Pat. Cashman, of Minnesota, acted as pallbearers. Father Nolan celebrated the Requiem Mass which was sung by the Elma choir, and he spoke eloquently of the good life so recently closed.
