SHIELDS.
Christopher Shields, one of Howard county’s oldest settlers, passed away at the home of his sister in Cresco, on Sunday, June 20th, 1909, at the age of 87 years.
Deceased was born in Kings county, Ireland, where he lived and grew to manhood, and learned the trade of a plasterer and mason. In 1857 he came to America and worked for a time at his trade in New York and other eastern cities, later coming west to Rockford, Ill., and to Howard county, when he bought from the government the farm in Howard Center where he has since resided. At the time the land office was at Osage, and during the succeeding years, he has witnessed the change of his land from a wilderness to a home for himself and his family.
In 1870, at Rockford, Ill., he was married to Elizabeth Connolly and to them nine children were born, two of whom with the wife and mother preceeded him to the better land. The surviving children are Mary E. Shields, Mrs. James Shea, Joseph, Charles and James of Howard Center, and Eliza¬beth and Christopher W. of Rochester, Minn. He also leaves to mourn his loss, one brother, Lawrence of Rock¬ford, Ill., and one sister, Julia of Cresco.
The deceased was one of the most highly respected citizens of the county, honest, industrious and a devout member of his church and will be sincerely mourned by his children and other relatives, and his many friends and neighbors.
The funeral services were held on last Tuesday morning from the Church of the Assumption, Father McCarty officiating, the interment being in St. Joseph’s cemetery.Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone shows the spelling of his last name as Sheilds and that he was born in 1823.
