OBITUARY.
MARY W. FIELDS
Daughter of Peter B. and Roxanna W. Fields, was born in New Haven, Conn., Feb 9th, 1829. Both parents dying in her childhood she was brought up by her grandmother with whom she lived till she was married to Charles W. Fields April 17th, 1850.
The first few years of their married life was spent in New Haven where Mr. Fields was engaged in business. In 1850 they came west as far as Illinois and in 1857 to Howard county, Iowa, where they took up a pre-emption claim and endured the privations of pioneer life.
In those early days the distance from medical assistance threw large responsibility on neighborly sympathy and aid in times of sickness and sorrow, in which helpful ministrations she took her full share, as many neighbors testify with loving appreciation.
In 1880 they left the farm and engaged in the business of a general store at Saratoga, Iowa, till 1891 when they removed to Cresco, Iowa.
After the death of her husband in 1896 she continued to reside in her own home till November, 1907, since which time she has made her home with her son, C. E. Fields, in Cresco where she died.
For nearly a year and a half she has been confined to her bed, and has endured patiently much suffering.
Death came quietly as a sweet release on Sunday evening, June 20th, 1909.
She was converted at an early age and united with the Congregational church, and was one of the charter members of the First Congregational church of Riceville. In 1874 she joined the Baptist church with the other members of the family and continued a faithful member till her death.
Four children were born, Mary A., wife of Frank A. Cutting, who died Nov. 16, 1878; Charlie E. of Cresco, Iowa, Fannie E., wife of R. F. Mc Elroy, Minneapolis, and Everett A., Hoopeston, Ill. These with nine grandchildren and one great grandson, Norbett Cutting, mourn her death.
Funeral services were held at the residence of C. E. Fields on Wednesday afternoon conducted by her pas¬tor, Rev. W. R. Hill, followed by interment beside her husband in Oaklawn cemetery.
Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. R. F. McElroy and son Wyllys, Minneappolis,{sp} Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Fields, Hoopeston, III., and daughter Marguerite, and Clifford F. Cutting, Stuartville, Minn.
