P. F. McHugh Dies Suddenly.
Attorney P. F. McHugh passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last Saturday evening, the 20th, at about 9:15.
He has been in poor health for several weeks following an attack of pneumonia, but was about town as usual the day of his death. He has made his home with the J. B. Barber family for a number of years and on this evening was sitting at a table reading. Mrs. Barber heard him make a groan and asked if he was ill. Mr. McHugh replied that he was suffering and that he felt much as if another attack of pneumonia was coming on. Dr. Plummer was called from down town and after a hasty examination advised Mr. McHugh that his condition was serious and to send for a speritual{sp} adviser, but he passed away almost immediately.
The funeral was held on Monday forenoon from the church of the Asstmption,{sp} with interment in St. Joseph’s cemetery.
Mr. McHugh has been singularly reticent regarding his family, even with those who were his intimate friends, and but little is known of his family. It is supposed that he has a cousin residing in Moline, Ill., but her name is unknown, and with this exception he is thought to be without a relative in America. His father, it is supposed, still resides in Edinburgh, Scotland, as among Mr. McHugh’s effects was found a letter from his father dated about two years ago. From occasional remarks so friends and from some documents in his office it is known that he was born March 17, 1865, the son of John McHugh, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was one of a family of five children. He was educated in the University of Edinburgh and received his degree at Stonyhurst college, England. After coming to America Mr. McHugh was for a time instructor in mathematics in a New York college, later going to Tennessee. His occupation there we do not know. Coming to Iowa, he taught school in the vicinity of Davenport and Iowa City and read law in the offices of Judge M. V. Gannon and Judge A. F. McGuirk. He graduated from the law department of the S. U. I. and came to Cresco about 14 years ago where he resided until his death.
