MOON.
Manley Milo Moon was born March 11, 1835, in Chautauqua county, New York, and pased{sic}away at hi home in Cresco late on Friday afternoon, May 8, 1908, aged 73 years, 2 months and 29 days. He was the youngest of nine children, all of whom have preceded him to the Heavenly home save one, a brother, who resides at Springfield, Mo.
When Mr. Moon was four years old, his father died, leaving the mother with the care of the large family, At the age of 13, Mr. Moon with his mother, came to Janesville, Wis., to reside, and at this young age he left home and began life for himself. When 15 years of age he taught his first term of school. Later he was engaged as assistant to the Clerk of the Courts at Janesville, Rock county, Wis., for several years.
Mr. Moon was one of the county’s pioneers, coming to New Oregon in 1857, where he engaged in merchandising until the removal of the business of the town to Cresco, where he continued in business for many years.
In 1867 he was elected to the office of county treasurer, which he held for six years. After his retirement from business he was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace which he held for 18 years. He was also referee of bankruptcy for Howard county.
In 1872, he was married to Bettie Avery Gilman, of Ohio. In 1875 a beautiful little daughter came to bless this union. In the fall of 1876 the angels bore her to Heaven.
Mr. Moon was a conservative man, but of that broad charity which looks for the good rather than for the evil in man. It is not too much to say that he belonged to that kingly race who wear their crown upon the heart and not upon the head.
Beside a companion, Mr. Moon leaves a loving daughter, Mrs. Robt. Pritchard of Spokane, Wash., to mourn his loss.
The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at his late home, Rev. Gammons officiating. Interment in Oak Lawn.
