Hanna Gruenwald was born on the 7th day of August, 1832, at Motzel, Pommerania, Germany, and was baptized and brought up a member of the Lutheran church; its interests were always dear to her during her long life. When grown to womanhoood{sic} she was united in wedlock with Wm. Mackenburg in 1855, who preceeded her in death five years ago. This union was blessed with 9 children; 6 sons, Frederick, Herman, William, John, Albert, Charles, and 3 daughters, Bertha, Mina and Anna, all of whom survive her with the exception of her oldest son Frederick who died shortly after his father. In 1867, the family decided to seek a home in the New World. In 1869, they moved to this county from Waukesha, Wis., and here the deceased had her home to the day of her death. Last autumn increasing feebleness compelled her to give up housekeeping and make her home with her daughter Anna (Mrs. Christ. Evert) From Christmas on she was failing fast and on Tuesday last January 28th, passed away. The funeral service was conducted in Immanuel Lutheran church. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery.
