Obituary.
James Kinney was born in County Clare, Ireland, December 25, 1823. He came to America in his 17th year and first located in New Jersey. Later he moved to Ohio and while in the latter place he was united in marriage with Anna McNevin. They moved to Wisconsin about 40 years ago and in a few years moved to Howard county, Iowa, first settling in Howard Center, but later came to Afton township and located on the farm where he lived until 1900, when he went to Rush City, Minn. Two years ago he went to Clark, South Dakota and made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Maggie Herbison. He had been blind for about 12 years and for the past year or more was in feeble health. The end came on Dec. 18, 1907. The remains were brought to Elma for burial.
Mr. and Mrs. Kinney were the parents of eight children; Mary Ballard of Omaha; Wm., Elma; Maggie Herbison, Clark, S. D.; Steve, Elma; John J., Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and Mrs. Parkill, of Clark, S. D. Two other children are dead.
The remains were accompanied here by Mrs. Kinney, Mr. and Mrs. Herbison and Mrs. Parkill.
Deceased enjoyed a wide acquaintance in this county. When he first came to Howard Center he was engaged running a boarding car on the C. M. & St. P. Railroad from Calmar to Rush Center, Minn. Old records show that he at one time was a constable and held other positions of trust He was an intelligent industrious and honorable man, a considerate neighbor and true friend.—Elma New Era.
