CONDUCTOR PATTEN'S DEATH

On Saturday night, about 10 o'clock, as the freight train going east was leaving the depot, the conductor, Mr. Geo. Patten, in endeavoring to walk on the top of the cars from the front of the train to the caboose, fell between the cars and was instantly killed; the fore part of his head was severed by the wheels and one arm broken. The accident happened during the violent storm of hail, rain, thunder and lightning. The severed part of his head could not be found at the time, it having stuck to the wheel and was carried some distance from the spot. The body was properly laid out, and was taken east on the train. The track opposite the depot where the accident took place, presented a sickening sight on the following morning; blood and brains being scattered on the track and ground.
