Rev. Q. H. Holmes was called from Algona on Friday last to officiate at the funeral of a former parishioner, Mr. Brown, father of our county superintendent, who passed away at his home in Cresco on Wednesday.

James Curtis Brown, son of William W. and Sarah A. Brown, was born in Evans, Erie county, N. Y., May 12, 1828. While quite young his father moved to Canada and then to Michigan, where he kept a store in one of the frontier towns. Afterward the family returned to New York where James grew to manhood in the home of an uncle and aunt.
Sept. 2, 1856, he was married to Elizabeth Buss at Cottage Inn, Wis. The same year the young couple turned their faces westward and joined the ranks of the pioneer settlers of Minnesota. For forty years they lived on a farm in Fillmore county where six children were born to them, Emily M., Sarah E., Hattie, Henry W., Alice E. and Mabel A.
In the fall of 1896 Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved to Cresco where they have since resided. For several years Mr. Brown has suffered ill health. He gradually grew worse till in the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1907, he passed to his eternal rest.
