OBITUARY
Laney Jane Dunbar-Becker was born in Oswego County, New York, Nov. 30, 1829, and would have been 78 years of age had she lived two months longer.
She married W. H. Becker in 1848, and for 58 years the two have traveled the highway of life together. They have pioneered in two states. They moved to Howard County, Iowa, in 1866, and to Spink County, South Dakota, in 1880. Only two or three women had wintered in the county in 1879 and in the winter of 1880-1, which was the winter of big snows, and cracked wheat, there were but a few women in the county. She knew the hardships of pioneer life and the incessant toil and economy required to rear a family in those days that tried not mens’ souls alone but the spirit and courage of the women as well.
The funeral was attended by a large number of old friends and relatives, Mondav. Oct. 1, 1906,
{Illegible due to a fold in paper}the lingering shadows of declining life for a few years longer, and three children, Joseph H. Becker, of Cresco, Ia., Mrs. Augusta Schoniger, wife of Wm. Schoniger, of Lodi Township, and John M. Becker, who still resides on part of the old farm in Great Bend Township. She also left eighteen grandchildren, seven of whom were present at the funeral and were among the saddest mourners there.— Redfield (South Dakota) Press, Oct. 4, 1906.
