Daniel Priest, Passes Away.
Daniel H. Priest, one of the most popular members of the Oakland Lodge of Elks and for many years one of the most widely known traveling men on the Pacific Coast, died at 1:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his residence at 934 Myrtle Street.
Mr. Priest had been ill for one week. Last Monday he took a turn for the worse and on Tuesday he became unconscious and never rallied until he passed peacefully way yesterday. The funeral will probably be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock.
Mr. Priest is survived by a widow, Mrs. Hannah E. Priest; one daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Priest-Fine, a noted California vocalist who recently went to New York and achieved success as a soloist and concert singer; and a son, B. Frank Priest, who lives in Oakland.
“Pop” Priest, as he was best known among the local Elks, lived in California for over 18 years. During the greater part of this time he was engaged as a traveling man, covering territory from Seattle to San Diego, and as far east as Denver, Colo., and in the many cities that he visited he made a host of friends.
Some years ago Mr. Priest left the road and became the manager of the cigar and tobacco department of Osgood’s drug store.
Deceased was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a member of the St. Paul, Minn., company, which suffered the greatest loss of any company that took part in the sanguinary conflict between the north and south. Out of one hundred and three men who left St. Paul to fight for “Old Glory" only six returned. One of these six was “Pop” Priest.—Oakland (Cal.) Tribune, June 18, 1906
Mr. Priest was the first landlord of the Strother House, coming to Cresco to open that hotel in 1876 and continued as such for several years, being succeeded by Mr. Worden Strother. Mr. Priest was very successful in that capacity and the Strother House had great popularity under his management.
