Sad Shooting Accident
Friday evening along about six o’clock or a little after a most deplorable accident occurred at the J. B. Norton home in the southwestern part of town when Cecil, aged 10, the youngest of four boys was accidentaly shot by an older brother. Three of the brothers had been playing with some sacks, practicing sack racing for the Fourth. They called to the other boy who was shooting rats in the barn to come and play with them. He did so. Mr. and Mrs. Norton returned from their berry patch about six o’clock and Mr. Norton requested the boys to go about the chores. Some of them started to drive home the cows. Cecil was given some berries to take to a neighbors, and the boy who had been shooting rats picked up the rifle which he had left standing in the granary when he went to play with with{sic} the other boys, and it is presumed he intended taking it to the house. In some manner it was discharged, the ball piercing Cecil in the back and severing one of the main arteries near the heart. He ran into his father's arms exclaiming, “papa, I am shot." Those are the last words he uttered. Dr. Overfield was summoned but arrived too late, the boy having expired in twenty minutes after the accident. The funeral was held from the Catholic church Sundav.—Elma New Era.
