OBITUARY
PLATT:
Saturday evening the people of Cresco were surprised and pained to learn of the death of Daniel Platt who passed away at about 7 o’clock after only about three days illness from pneumonia. Few knew of his illness at all and that his condition was so serious was scarcely realized by any. Wednesday, he returned from a business trip to Chicago and was taken with a severe chill, the forerunner of the fast attack of pneumonia.
Daniel Platt was born in Swanton, Vermont, July 25, 1828, where he resided for 25 years. In 1853, he married Martha Pennock and removed to Wisconsin. He engaged in mercantile business at Lone Rock, Wisconsin, where in 1858, Mrs. Platt died.
In 1866, he married Florence Southard, and the same year they moved to Cresco, where he has since had his home and for forty years has been engaged in business; the first store built in Cresco was built by him in 1866.
Mr. Platt served Cresco at various times as councilman and mayor, and as one of her pioneer business men was very widely known.
For forty years he maintained a reputation for strict integrity and uprightness in all his dealing.
Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his loss and cherish his memory, two daughters, Mrs. C. L. Harding, of Mason City, and Mrs. C. L. Terry, of Cresco, and one son, J. L. Platt, of Cresco, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral took place Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Congregational church, Rev. J. A. Eakin officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery. As a mark of respect to the memory or the deceased, all the business houses of the city closed at the hour of his funeral.
