Mrs. Patrick McGrane.
Death’s silent reaper which is ever busy in our midst, on the evening of Feb. 12, 1905, claimed for himself one of Howard County’s oldest and most respected pioneers, Elizabeth Hankinson McGrane. Mrs. McGrane had more than filled the allotted three score and ten having celebrated her 76th birthday. She was married in New York in 1850 to Patrick McGrane and came to Iowa 47 years ago, settling on the old homestead where after a life of well spent endeavor, she peacefully yielded up her spirit into the hands of Him who gave it. Although the day of the funeral was one of the most severe we have had this winter, the largest funeral cortege attested the high regard in which Mrs. McGrane was held by friends and neighbors. Father Nolan celebrated Requiem High Mass which was sung by Misses Fannie Deveraux and Jennie Blewer, of Elma. In his sermon, Father Nolan paid a most fitting tribute to Mrs. McGrane’s memory.
She is survived by her sons Messrs. John McGrane, of Deerfield, and Will McGrane of this place and by her daughters Mrs. Jas. Cusack and Mrs. Henry Brinkman, of Oelwein, and Mesd. Jas. Kelly, Jas. Clear, Geo. Keefe, and F. N. Dormedy, of this place.—Alta Vista Vidette.
