Another Old Settler Gone-
Saturday morning, Mr. Patrick Daugherty, of Paris township, passed away after a week of illness, aged somewhere about 65 years. He had been a resident of the county for about 43 years and through industry and careful about expenditures had become possessed of a fine patrimony in the way of farm lands. The writer had known him since 1858 at which time he hid left Minnesota and was on his way east stopping over Sunday camping in the ravine just east of New Oregon with his wife and one or two children where he was letting his ox team graze. At that time Mr. D. W. Owen and the writer induced him to remain over and engage to work the farm of Samuel Herrick adjoining the one which he afterwards owned and where he died. The writer has had business transactions with the deceased from that day to the present time and always found him honest and true to his business engagements. From the time the PLAIN DEALER started in 1859, he became one of its patrons and always paid in advance as he was at the time of his death. He had his faults as many another man has, but Pat Daugherty was a true and tried friend of this office and as such we cherish ills memory.

Obituary.
On the evening of March 23, 1901, the home of Patrick Doherty of Paris twp. was rendered sorrowful and desolated, by the sudden and unexpected call to eternity. Patrick Doherty was born in Ireland in 1832; in March, 1855 he was joined in happy marriage with Marget Demming. Deceased came to this county in 1857 with his wife and one child, a little boy. In the spring of 1859, they commenced work on the Herick farm, adjoining their present home; since then, by economy and industry a handsome property, a comfortable home, he was the angel which heaven had placed in watch to protect the virtues of that home, and well did he prove himself worthy of heavens trust, and well might he have been proud of the manly sons and virtuous daughters who surrounded his death bed.
After one short week of sickness he closed his eyes in death, having first received the sweet consolation which his religeon{sic} affords to the departing faithful, and after having said a fond farewell to the weeping children and sorrowing friends who surrounded his bed side. The funeral services took place at the Catholic church in Cresco on the morning of March 26th, when the sacred remains of the father they loved so well, and placed him before the Altar of God where flowers had been beautifully arranged by the hands of loving friends. Rev. Father McCarthy delivered a very beautiful funeral sermon and when the services were closed, we laid the dead to rest in the beautiful Catholic cemetery.
The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of all the friends. The funeral was largely attended, many attending church who were unable to secure teams.
He leaves three sons and six daughters to mourn his loss, it was indeed hard to see him go.
Ah, rest, thou good and saintly father in whose breast ne’er dwelt a selfish thought, days, months and years may roll along, and yet we will miss thee from our home, but from the lessons thou hast taught, we hope to meet thee once again. COM.
CARD OF THANKS.
We wish to tender our thanks to the friends who so kindly assisted us during the sickness and after the death of our beloved father.
FAMILY.

Transcriber’s Note: The name is spelled two different ways; however, the gravestone shows Doherty.
