Obituary.
Jacob Raetz was born June 18, 1860, at Rappersville Canton Bern, Switzerland, as the seventh child of Benedickt Raetz and his wife, whose marriage was blessed with nine children. Three brothers died before him and one brother of the deceased lives in Switzerland, as preacher and minister of the gospel, and one brother lives in Bremer county, and four of his sisters live in Switzerland. Jacob Raetz was when a little child baptized after the custom of the Protestant church, attended public school in Switzerland for seven years, was instructed in religion and confirmed in his church When 20 years old, he served as a soldier in the army of Swizerland{sic}. In 1883 he came to America and worked two years on a farm in Fayette county, Iowa. March 19,1885 he married Mary Gerber. This marriage was blessed with nine children. One of them, Anna, died six years ago. The deceased was never sick during his life and when he was attacked by pneumonia and grippe last Wednesday, February 20, 1901, it was such a fearful attack, that he could not overcome it. Yet he bore all pains with wonderful resignation to God’s will. He seemed to be a little better Monday morning, but in the afternoon the sickness made another attack, which ended his life at about 5 o’clock. His wife and children deeply mourn the loss of a kind husband and father, and all his relatives and friends mourn in him the loss of a good and upright man. Much sympathy was shown to the mourning family on this sad occasion on the day of the funeral. The funeral services were held by Rev. C. Niedermeier, his pastor and the interment was at the New Oregon cemetery. May he rest in peace until the glorious day of the resurrection.Transcriber's Note: His name is spelled as Ratz on his gravestone.
