Obituary.
LONG—Lawrence J. Long died at his home in this city on Sunday morning, Feb. 10, 1901, aged 77 years, 5 months and 12 days.
Deceased was born in Tipperary Co., Ireland, Aug. 26, 1823, and at the age of 24 years left his native country and came to America, settling first in the state of Connecticut, later coming west as far as Dubuque and finally locating in this county, where he died as above stated, of heart failure, superinduced by an attack of lagrippe, after an illness of about ten days.
Five and thirty years ago he came to Howard county and located on a plot of her peerless prairie land in Paris twp. ‘Twas here he tilled the virgin soil till it blossomed as the rose; ‘twas here he founded him a home. He endured all the trials and vicissitudes incident to pioneer life and bore them bravely. With a willing heart and steady hand he stuck to the plow, and wrested from earth’s bosom the hidden wealth she holds. Five years ago he left the farm and came to Elma to rest from the labors advanced age made so onerous, and to enjoy the fruits of his years of toil. By many of us his familiar face will be sadly missed and his cheery greeting we shall hear no more this side of the Great White Throne. An affectionate husband, a loving father, a kind friend, an honest, upright man has fallen and as we place him beneath the sod on this bright winter’s morning we pause to shed a tear.
Besides a wife, deceased leaves five children, J. P. Long, of Rice, Minn., J. D. Long, of Ossian, and L. J. Long, of Lourdes, and two small children, who with numerous relatives and friends mourn his loss.
The funeral was held from the Catholic church of this city Monday forenoon, Rev. Father Gunn officiating. Interment took place in the Catholic cemetery at Lourdes, whither the remains were followed by a large concourse of sympathizing friends, Father Nelson officiating at the grave.— Northern Iowa Democrat.
