TIMES March 11, 1875 P4 C3

ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE.

Mrs. Clouse, the widow of Wm Clouse, so well known a few years since in this county, died in Drakesville, N. J., the fore part of February. When they came to Howard county the family consisted of parents, two sons and one daughter. The oldest son, Albert, who was married, after remaining a few years, returned to New Jersey, where he died. Hampton, the other son, went to California in the company that Judge Gilcrist went with. After reaching the land of gold his friends heard from him a few times; and then could get no further intelligence, and after years of anxiety were compelled to give him up as dead. The daughter married Mr. Stone Neff, who died at Lime Springs five or six years ago. The parents and widowed daughter returned to New Jersey, where Mr. Clouse was killed instantly by the cars running over him. The daughter married for her second husband Mr. Wilkison, and lives in Darkesville, and is the only surviving member of the family.

There is a sad reflection connected with this brief history. Mr. Clouse was naturally a good citizen, well liked, with fair business talents, and might have been a live man, for aught we know, with a competency of this world's goods, had he not contracted an appetite for intoxicating drinks, which rendered him and his hard earned means an easy prey to the heartless whicky vendors. He left the county a poor man.
