WOODWARD.
Julia Markham, daughter of B. O. and Mary Markham, was born at Little Valley, Cattaraugus county, New York, January 6, 1858, and died of dropsy at her home near Dell Rapids, South Dakota, after a long illness, on Thursday night, October 27, 1904, aged 48 years, 9 months and 21 days.
In 1876, she came to Howard county, and on December 4, 1881, was united in marriage to W. E. Woodward, and made this their home until about five years ago when they removed to their Dakota home. To them were born five children, three of whom are living, Mrs. Byrl Schlafer, and the Misses Mary and Nettie, who, with a little grand daughter and the sorrowing husband, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother— the acme of true womanhood. Mrs. Woodward also leaves an aged father and brother, Will Markham, and four sisters, Mrs. Geo. Sage of Spooner, Wis., Mrs. Albert Hess, of Elma and the Misses Hattie and Jessie Markham of Cresco.
In 1879 she was baptized into the Baptist church of Cresco, in which she held membership at the time of her death, and has in all respects led a truly Christian life.
The remains were brought to Cresco for interment, the funeral being held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Kirby of the Baptist church, and the loved form was laid at rest in the New Oregon cemetery, being followed to its last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and oldtime neighbors anxious to pay their last tribute of esteem to the memory of the deceased. The services at the grave were conducted by the R. N. A. of which deceased was a member, the M. W. A. also attending the funeral as a body. The floral offerings were profuse and fine, mutely eloquent with the sincere sympathy of the givers.
A good, true woman, faithful to her family and and{sic} to her God, has gone to her reward, and the bereaved ones left to mourn her loss have the sincere sympathy of all.
The following relatives from a distance were in attendance at the funeral, in addition to the immediate family: WM. Woodward, Oscar Schlafer and Albert Holton o Dell Rapids Mr. and Mrs. O. Gordon and Art Howland and Mrs. Mary Frost of Lime Springs, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hess of Elma.
CARD OF THANKS.
We desire to express our sincere thanks to all the friends who so kindly assisted at the time of the death and funeral of our wife, mother, daughter and sister, and especially are our thanks due to the R. N. A. and M. W. A.
