Martin Lukes died on January 29, 1904, at the home of his son J. J. Lukes, near Protivin, Iowa, aged 92 years.
The deceased was born in Bohemia in 1812, and came to New York in the winter of 1864. The next spring he removed to Iowa, settling on the farm 2-1/2 miles east of Protivin, in Lincoln twp., Winneshiek county, now owned by his son Fred Lukes.
He leaves a family consisting of a wife, four sons, J. J., Fred, Henan, W. F. and Frank, two daughters, Mrs. Ross Chyle and Mrs. Mary Swiska, of Jackson Junction, 42 grandchildren and 12 great-grand children, all of whom be had seen before his death. In all his long life he had never been ill a day in his life until the illness which preceded his death, even having passed through the great scourge of cholera as a physician’s assistant. His wife, nine years his junior, has likewise been favored with perfect health and even now is able to do housework as actively as a young girl. That his dealings were always fair and honorable is shown by the fact that never in his life was he a party to a law suit.
His funeral occurred February 1st at the Catholic church in Protivin.
