ELDRIDGE
Eliza A. Carleton was born in Bath, New Hampshire, July 26, 1821. She was married at St. Clair, Mich., June 25,1840, to Ira Eldridge, of Columbus, Ohio, who died July 3,1893. They lived in Columbus until 1855, when they came to Howard county, locating five miles southeast of Cresco. They came to Cresco about 1883. She died February 28, 1904. Eleven children were born to them, eight of whom survive them, Charles H., Elton M., Mrs. Olive Edmister, Mrs. Irene Smith, and Mrs. Mattie Fish, of Cresco; Mrs. Mary Finn, of Watertown, S. D.; Mrs. Alice White, of Ipswich, S. D.; and Ed. C. Eldridge, of Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Eldridge were among our first and most valued acquaintances in Howard county in 1857, they having proceeded us some two years or more. Intelligent, refined, social and neighborly, both Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge were courted and esteemed and sought after by the most worthy and intelligent. The best in literature was always abundantly found at their home. The bond of political friendship and of religious thought was complete and harmonious between the writer and those who presided at the Eldridge home and so endured to the end. With the sorrowing children there must pleasure, profit and satisfaction in contemplating such a worthy parentage, and corresponding grief and sorrow at the separation. With them in their hour of deep sorrow the PLAIN DEALER is in the fullest sympathy.
