Death of John Rostratter.
The friends and relatives of John Rostratter were surprised and pained to hear of his death at his home near Staples, Minn., on Friday morning last, his death resulting from a kick by a horse the Tuesday previous.
The deceased was born in Buffalo, N. Y., Aug., 5, 1848, and died Oct., 2., 1903, aged 55 years. He came to Howard county in 1868 and resided here until in Oct. 1901, when he moved his family to their present home at Staples, Minn.
Nov. 13, 1871, he was married to Catherine Welch, and to them were born three daughters, who died in infancy, and seven sons, who still survive: Charles E., of Denver, Colo., John B., of Cresco, and Geo., Lewis, Eddie, Leo and Dan, of Staples.
The last rites of the Catholic church of which the deceased was a faithful member were performed at Staples, and on Monday, Oct., 5th, the remains were laid at rest in St. Joseph’s cemetery at Cresco.
The deceased was a highly esteemed member of the Woodmen of the World and the Yeomen, the former society attending the funeral in a body.
During all the years of the decedents residence in this county, he proved himself a man of such, honesty, industry and moral attributes as to win the esteem and respect of all acquaintances, and in his death the family has lost a true husband and father and the people a good neighbor and citizen.
Those from a distance attending the funeras{sic} were his brothers-in-law, D. E. Welch and wife of Minneapolis; Ed Welch, of Des Moines; and J. H. Welch and wife of Calmar; a half brother, G. E. Ferrie, of St. Paul; his step-father, Peter Ferrie, of Elma and the latter’s son, Peter Ferrie, Jr.
The remains were accompanied to Cresco by his widow and his sons, Chas, Lewis and Eddie.
CARD OF THANKS.
We desire to hereby return thanks to the W. O. W. and others who so kindly assisted at the burial of our husband and father.

Nov. 8th the clerk of the local camp received a check for the John Rostratter claim from the W. O. W. for $1000. Rather prompt work, considering that notification of death was not made until Oct 8th, and that all business in the matter was obliged to be done through the local camp, and the papers had to be sent back and forth from Cresco to Staples, Minn., where he died.
