“Another Hero Gone—Another of the true and valiiant{sic} youth of the land has gone to his rest. Loriston S. Averill, a member of Co. I, 9th Iowa Reg’t, by a large concourse of sympathetic friends was followed on Wednesday lest{sic} to his final resting place. In the fall of 1861 he enlisted from this town and was with his regiment in every conflict down to the surrender of Vicksburg. About that time having endured the hardships of some of the severest campaigns of the war, and upon many a hard fought field, having fearlessly faced the hurricane of leaden hail that swept over them, in every instance doing his duty cheerfully, manfully, and with heroic daring, his strong frame and iron constitution gave way under the prostrating influences and enervating effects of southern malaria. Recovering partially from his protracted illness he returned home some two weeks since to receive the cordial welcome of his parents and friends—and die. His funeral was a sad solemn scene to behold. In looking over the multitude assembled to perform the solemn rites of burial, scarcely a young man of his years was to be seen, all having been devoured in the insatiable and cruel jaws of civil war, while women clad in the habilments{sic} of mourning for husbands and sons, children mourning the untimely end of fathers and brothers were everywhere to be seen. ”Transcriber’s Note: New Oregon Cemetery records indicate he is buried there. He was born January 10, 1843 and died October 16, 1863. His parents were Loriston and Elizabeth Averill.
