GAIUS H. CHURCH.

Gaius H. Church was born in South Barmbridge, now Afton, New York, on April 10, 1832.
In June 1854 he went to California seeking for gold. After a year and a half , late in 1855, he returned home, and in April, 1856, was united in marriage to Miss Adaline Gillett who still survives him. To this union were born four children. The eldest, a boy, died in infancy. The next three in order are Mrs. Addie Raglan of Cresco, Iowa, Edwin A. Church of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Gaius Windsor Church of Cresco, who still live, and ministered to their father in his last illness.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Church came to McGregor, Iowa, and later in the same year, 1856, they moved to Howard county and settled on a farm about seven miles southwest of New Oregon, where they lived until the fall of 1877, when they moved to their present farm home one mile south of Cresco. Then, about five years ago they moved into town where they have since resided.
Six weeks ago on Sunday, Nov. 23, Mr. Church was taken sick and lingered with much suffering until death released him Sunday evening, Jan. 4, 1903, at the age of 70 years, 9 months and 25 days.
About 15 years ago he was converted and united with the Congregational church, of which he has since been a consistent and faithful member. He was always at church when able, and last Sunday morning, just before his death, while hardly able to speak, he looked up at the clock and said, “It is time for service and I must get ready to go,” but he was soon called to the church triumphant.
His last thoughts were of home and he often expressed a desire to be at rest. He was perfectly resigned to go, as he frequently said, “It is God’s will. Thy will be done,” and so he peacefully passed away.
His character as a citizen for honesty and integrity are well and favorably known and needs no comment.
The funeral services were held at the house Tuesday, January 6th, Rev. J. A. Eakin, his pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. J. B, Smith. The interment was in New Oregon cemetery.
Besides his many friends and relatives at Cresco, there were present at the funeral from abroad, his brother. L. F. Church, and wife of McGregor,
