Crossed the Divide.
Charles W. Sawyer who has been prominent socially and in civil life in Howard county since its early settlement, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. W. A. Wildman, Sunday morning December 14, in his 80 year He was born at Whiting Vt., July 22, 1823 and married at Belvidere, {illegible}. with Jane H. Wood, June 22. 1845, who died in Cresco, August 9, 1888. He settled in Vernon Springs in 1855, residing there until he removed to Cresco when the city was in its infancy.
In his youth he was a resident of Mayvllle, Chautauqua county, New York, where his father was pastor of the Baptist church, at that village. In 1857 when the editor of the PLAIN DEALER come to the county Mr. Sawyer was a resident of Vernon Springs and except two years in Dakota had ever since been a resident of the township. He was a member of Company I, 38th Jowa infantry, a company raised almost exclusively In Howard county. For many years he had held positions of honor and trust in the county discharging the duties imposed with faithfulness and fidelity at the time of his death holding the office of deputy sheriff, a position he had held under the administration of the office by J. Ashton Hall, Mr. Howlett and Mr. Campbell. For more than eleven years he had been present to open every term of the district, court of the county as court crier, deputy sheriff and court bailiff. He was an independent in politics giving his vote and influence in behalf of the best man in township and county office regardless of action of his party. His voice and influence was always in behalf of what he deemed the right and if he erred his purpose was for the right. In church and society his example was worthy of commendation. Four daughters, several grand children and the public of Howard county mourn his death and are sorrowers with the bereaved relatives.
