Obituary.
Clara R. Robinson was born in the town of Benington, Wyoming county, New York, on the 2d day of September, 1838. She was the eldest of nine children, three daughters and six sons. Her girlhood life was spent at the home of her father. She received her education at the common schools.
She was married to S. B. Carpenter on the 20th day of March, 1864. Together with her husband she came west in the spring of 1865. After spending two years on a farm in Bristol township, Fillmore county, Minn., they settled in the village of Florenceville, Iowa. Here they remained until the spring of 1877, when they moved to Cresco, Iowa, which has since been their home.
Mrs. Carpenter for the past 20 years has had very poor health. She lost the sight of one of her eyes about that time, and since that time the eye has been gradually growing worse until on the 24th day of December 1901, she submitted to an operation and had the eye removed, when it was found that a growth had formed back of the eye, which being analyzed, proved to be of a cancerous nature. The immediate cause of her death was a recurrence of the cancer on the liver. After suffering intense pain for three months she passed away May 6, 1902. The last was prayerful and painless.
Mrs. Carpenter, before she was afflicted with poor health was an active member of society. She was quiet in her habits but loyally devoted to her home. She was a kind neighbor, a true friend, a loving sister and a faithful wife.
She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband, an aged father, two sisters and four brothers.
By her request the funeral was held at her home, services being conducted by Rev. C. A. Marshall and Rev. O. H. Holmes, and she was laid at rest in Oak Lawn cemetery. The floral display was very beautiful, many flowers being contributed by her loving friends.
Those in attendance at the funeral from abroad were C. O. Carpenter and his daughter, Mrs. Lucas of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. E.E. Carpenter of Watertown, South Dakota; Mr. Fred Carpenter of Riceville, Iowa, and C. F. Robinson and family of Granger, Minn.
CARD OF THANKS.
I take this opportunity of expressing my sincere and heartfelt thanks to all those who so kindly assited me during the sickness and burial of my wife.
S. B. Carpenter.
