Edward Burnikel, 79, of Lime Springs, Iowa passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m.Tuesday June 26, 2018 at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Burial will be at a later time. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. with a rosary at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday before services. The Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Edward Burnikel was born on October 11, 1938 in Cresco, Iowa to John and Luella (Herold) Burnikel. After graduation Edward enlisted in the United States Air Force from July 15, 1957 to February 1961. On October 20, 1962 he was united in marriage to Geraldine (Geri) Weber at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco.
Edward started out his career as the manager of the egg processing business in Lime Springs, IA and later as the custodian of Lime Springs Elementary School, retiring in 2005. After retirement Edward started his own lawn care business. He took pride in his lawns that he cared for. He was also very proud of his grandchildren and attending their many sporting events and teaching them how to fish or playing a game of Ziltch.
Edward is survived by his wife, Geri of 55 years; a son Dan (Jayne) Burnikel of Winona, MN; daughters DeAnn (Don) Leeps of Decorah, IA and Deb (Mike) Tompkins of Montezuma, IA.; grandchildren Lexi and Owen Burnikel, Jessie and Jacob Leeps, and Boe, Mason, and Corbin Tompkins; a great grandson Gauge Tompkins; brothers Harold “Butch” (Dorene) Burnikel of Lime Springs, IA, Richard (Barbara) Burnikel of Green Bay, WI, and Dale (Connie) Burnikel of Protivin, IA and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister in infancy, in-laws Albert and Irene Weber, and a nephew Mark Burnikel in 2012.
Memorials may be given to Howard County Community Hospice.
