Obituary.
At the age of 39 years 8 months and 4 days, Wm. F. Friend died at his home in New Oregon, He was born near East Whitby, Canada, August 6, 1860, and came to Howard county in March 1877, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Friend, who located on what was then known as the Cole farm, directly opposite the late home of deceased.
March 20, 1881, he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Mintey. To them were born three children, two of whom, Ethel and Alice, with their mother, remain to mourn this untimely bereavement. Beside his immediate family he leaves three brothers and four sisters to mourn his death. He was taken sick but ten days before his death, and during that ten days his suffering must have been intense to bring a strong, healthy man to the grave.
From his boyhood days he has been well and intimately known to our people and was universally respected by them. He was promnently{sic} mentioned for nomination for the legislature by his democratic friends throughout the county last year, and with his studious, thoughtful habits, his industry, his honesty, his energy and perseverance, had great promise of the future before him. Starting in life without means, through diligence, economy in expenditure, and untiring activity in life, he acquired a fine farm and home.
The funeral was from his late home, the interment in New Oregon cemetery. Rev. O. H. Holmes, of whose church the deceased was a conscientious worshiper officiating,
