Cresco, Ia. - Special:
Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church here for Richard E. Culbertson, 46, World War veteran, who died at his home here following a stroke of paralysis.

The Rev. Arthur D. Phelps, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. T.M. Nielsen, pastor of the Methodist Church of which Mr. Culbertson was a member.

Burial was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Culbertson was born Dec. 10, 1891 at Downing, Wis. When still a young man, he came to Cresco, engaging in the trucking business.

He was married May 28, 1917 to Bessie Elaine Christ of Cresco, and to them was born a son, Joyce Kilmar.

When the World War broke out, Mr. Culbertson enlisted on Sept. 18, 1917. He was assigned to Company F, 101 Engineers 26th Division. On Nov 3, just eight days before the Armistice was signed he was injured while on active duty in Verdun, France, and as a result lost his left leg. After many months in various army hospitals, he was discharged on March 21, 1920, since which time he resided in Cresco.

He was awarded a special citation by President Wilson, the Accolade of the new chivalry of humanity, and the order of the Purple Heart was also bestowed on him.

He was a member of the WOW, the Methodist Church, and the Legion. He had just begun service as commander of the Cresco Legion post.

He leaves his widow and son; two brothers and three sisters.
