OBITUARY.
STRAWN—At the family home in Cresco, Sarah, consort of Charles Strawn, April 16, 1899, aged 72 years.
Sarah Miles was born April 16th, 1827 near South Bend, Ind., and died at 6 o’clock p. m. April 16th, 1899. She was married to Chas Starwn{sic} at Kishankie, Ill. May 10,1843. They removed to Howard Co., Ia., June 19th, 1854, settling on a farm in New Oregon Tp., where they have since resided until a few years ago, when age and infirmities compelled them to give up hard labor, and they bought them a home in Cresco. She was the mother of 15 children, 13 of whom are still living.
Her great mother heart opened to every homeless child that appealed to her sympathy. Her house was the haven of the homeless ones who sought her home. In sickness no hand could be more tender than hers; in times of sorrow her presence was balm to aching hearts, for all know that her pity was deep and genuine.
Her robust constitution and ambitious spirit, enabled her to accomplish more than seemed possible to the majority of women, and she met all hardships and trials with the fortitude of brave womanhood. Nothing ever defeated her cheerful courage nor her steadfastness of purpose. She was as firm in her friendship as in her integrity of character— every one trusted her, and she never betrayed a trust. She was faithful in all things. For many years she was Senior Vice President of the Cresco W. R. C. and naught but direst necessity prevented her attendance at the meetings. She was ill but three days ere death released her brave spirit.
Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon by Revs. Hendricks and Lane. The members of the Relief Corps also rendered the beautiful and touching service provided for members who pass to the other shore. The floral offerings from the corps and her host of friends, were exquisitely beautiful.
Deep sympathy is felt for the husband, now almost sightless, in the loss of this stay of his life, for the weary days when he must feel the loss of her cheerful and gentle ministrations; and for the children who shall know the loss of a devoted mother.
She was laid to rest in New Oregon Cemetery, where the flower laden casked{sic} was lowered to the narrow confines appointed for the living by the bearers, H. C. Howard, E. M. Cole, Wm. Blackburn, A. E. Barker, Phillip Howe and H. Johnson.—Times
