Mr. Ernest Hoppie a veteran of the civil war, living on the south side, died at his home Thursday morning aged along in the 60’s probably.

Transcriber’s Note: New Oregon Cemetery show that he is buried there and the spelling of his last name as Hoppe.

Obituary.
Enos George Hoppie was born October 6, 1838, in Kalbe, Germany. When 20 years old he came to America with his parents and 8 brothers and 1 sister and the family settled in Lena, Illinois. He enlisted for the civil war in 1862, August 13th, and fought for his adopted country three years. At the close of the war he got the typhoid fever and afterwards asthma, from which he never recovered. He got an honorable discharge, when the war was over. In 1868, Jan. 24th, he married Miss Katharina Derr and lived with her 31 years in marriage and had 5 sons and 8 daughters, all of whom mourn the loss of their dear father. The family lived some years in Lena, Illinois, and finally settled in Paris township, Howard county. Last December, a year ago he moved to Cresco, to enjoy the rest of his life in peace. Saturday, the 15th of April he was taken very ill with pneumona{sic}, and died a few days afterwards Thursday April 20th at 2 o’clock in the morning. The funeral took place Saturday April 22nd, the services being in the Methodist church hold by Rev. O. Niedermeier and Rev. Hendricks of Ridgeway. The remains were taken to the New Oregon Cemetery. All that knew Mr. Hoppie in his life give him the testimony that lie was an upright, honorable man and a kind husband and loving father.
