Services were held Saturday, July 7 at the United Methodist Church, Unionville, Missouri, for Norman E. Smith, 82, retired cattleman and farmer, who died Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville.
The Rev. Bob Francis officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services.
Mr. Smith was born July 29, 1918 at Galt, Iowa in Wright County, son of Edward Herbert and Carrie (Clark) Smith. At an early age the family moved to Rockwell, Iowa in Cerro Gordo County, where he attended Cerro Gordo country schools.
He married Della Peterson at the Lutheran Church in Rockwell, Iowa June 22, 1941, and the couple established their home in Howard County, near LeRoy, Minnestoa{sic} where they lived for 25 years.
The family moved to Lucerne, Missouri Feb. 25, 1967 and began building an Angus cow herd and farming operation known as Nor-Del Farms, Inc. Their sons, Robert and Paul, joined them in the operation and currently manage the farms.
He loved farming and caring for animals, and noted "If one takes care of the soil, the soil will take care of you." Conservation practices were a part of his farming operation.
Before moving to Missouri he was actively involved with several organization{sic} and was on the building committee of the LeRoy Lutheran Church in 1954. At his death he was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Unionville.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Della; children, Lydon Smith, Unionville; Phyllis Jarrett and husband, Ron, West Burlington, Iowa; Robert Smith and wife Judy, Powersville, Mo., and Paul Smith and wife Paula of Lucerne Missouri. Also eight grandchildren, Chad Jarrett, Jennifer Wood, Steven Jarrett, Jeff Livingston, Andrea Smith, Kerry Smith, Chris Vicek and Tyler Smith, and five great-grandchildren, Jillian Livingston, Gage Jarrett, Emma Jarrett, Ryan Wood and Ashlyn Wood. Also a sister, Harriet Lundt, Rockwell, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and a brother.
