ELMA -- Reverend Roger R. Rethamel, 67, Elma, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 at his sister's home in Charles City of cancer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. -5 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with Archbishop Jerome Hanus as principal celebrant and diocesan priests concelebrating the mass. Reverend Dwayne Tho- man will be homilist.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista with a 4 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture Service, and also an hour prior to services at the church. Conway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Roger Raymond Rethamel was born near Schley in Howard County, July 10, 1934, the son of Raymond Joseph and Helen Stella (Kubik) Rethamel. He attended St. Mary's Elementary School in New Hampton and was a 1952 graduate of New Hampton High School. He graduated from Loras College in 1956 with a BA degree. He received his training for the priesthood at Mt. St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque and was ordained a priest Jan. 30, 1960 at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque by Archbishop Leo Binz. He served Holy Ghost Parish in Dubuque 1960-1966, Sacred Heart Church in Osage 1966- 1970, St. Joseph Church in Farley 1970-19/1, St. Edward Church in Waterloo 1971-1979, St. Pius Church in Cedar Rapids 1979-1980, Sacred Heart Church in Manly 1980- 1982, Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City and St. Mary's in Roseville 1982-1987, St. Joseph Church in Cresco, St. Agnes Church at Plymouth Rock 1987-1992 and Immaculate Conception Church in Elma 1992 to present. St. Bernard's in Alta Vista was later added, as was Our Lady of Lourdes Church 1998 to present. Father Rethamel served as Dean in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Charles City Deanery 1984- 1992, New Hampton Deanery 1997-2001 and Chaplain of ACCW and the Knights of Columbus State Chaplain from 1975-1979. He enjoyed fishing and quality time with his family.
Survivors include one sister, Lois (Garland) Girken, Charles City; two brothers, Merle (Alice) Rethamel, New Hampton and Eldon (Pennie) Rethamel, Fredericksburg.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Reed and Dale Rethamel.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or Right to Life.
