NEW HAMPTON - Mildred Irene Leitch, 86, New Hampton, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton, with Rev. David Bergstrom and Rev. Kevin Frey officiating. Edith Kolthoff was organist, accompanying Peter and Phyllis Wiliadsen singing "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" and the congregational singing of "How Great Thou Art .
Interment was in the New Hampton Cemetery with Neil Kahn Jr., Steve Chapin, Dwight Kolthoff, Linda Hugh, Barb Folkers and Greg Lamka as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Neil Kahn Sr., Laurel Lamka, Clayton Burgart, Carl Schmidt, Joe Koleno, Earl Schneider and Red DeVries.
Visitation was held from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 7 at the Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home in New Hampton, with a 7 p.m. Memorial Video Tribute and also an hour prior to the services at the church.
Mildred was born in rural Howard County on May 30, 1914, the daughter of John and Katherine (Runkle) Eernisse. She attended grade school in Osage and graduated from Rowley High School, Rowley, in 1932. On Oct. 1, 1946, Mildred married Theodore Leitch. The couple lived in Williamstown where they owned the Williamstown Store from 1963 until retiring in 1988. Mildred had been the Justice of the Peace
from the early 1950s until the mid-1960s. She was a member of the Williamstown United Methodist Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid. She was also a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mildred enjoyed traveling and sewing.
Survivors include one son, Chad (Rita) Leitch, Dubuque; two daughters, Joan (Merlin) Straw, New Hampton and Jean (Glen) Huffman, Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Theodore on Jan. 28, 1988; a grandson, Adam Leitch on June 10, 1998; two brothers, John and Paul Eernisse; two sisters, Anna Lewis and Helen Poula.
