Funeral services for Lucille Johnson were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 23 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs. The Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs.
Lucille Isabella Johnson was born February 25, 1903 in rural Chester the daughter of John Albert and Frances Cordelia (Smith) Johnson. She attended a rural school one through eighth grade and graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1921. She attended Carleton College, Iowa State College and received her B.A. from the State University of Iowa in 1932. She taught in rural schools and also taught in West Des Moines, Perry, Maynard, Cherokee and Mason City. She started the Special Education Program in Cherokee and started the Jr. High Program for Educable Mentally Retarded in Mason City in 1951 and taught there until her retirement in 1969. Lucille moved to Sumner in 1992. She entered Hillcrest Nursing Home in February of 1998 where she remained until her death on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the age of 98 years.
Lucille was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, life member of the Iowa State Education Association, a 50 year member of the WaTanYe Club, First Presbyterian Church, Alpha Delta Kappa, and a life member of the Pioneer Museum Historical Society. Survivors include one brother: George of Chester; and two sisters: Mabel Rembold of Sumner and Nellie Miller of Chillicother, IL.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; one brother: Allen; and one sister: Clarice Van Zante.
