Services were held for Kathleen Hazel Johnson, 79, of Chester, at the Chester United Methodist Church, Chester. The Rev. Tim Walker officiated the service. Burial was at Chester Hill Cemetery, Chester.
Kathleen Johnson died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 at Rochester Methodist Hospital following an operation for pancreatic cancer in July.
She was born on March 16, 1922 in rural Chester, IA, Howard County to William J. Armstrong and Hazel Markham Armstrong. She attended two local schools and was the sole graduate of Chester High School in 1940. After graduation she attended Upper Iowa University for one year. She moved to Santa Monica, CA and worked for one year at Douglas Aircraft. After returning home, she worked for the Register of Deeds in Austin, MN but the Chester area was always her home. On October 12, 1944 she was united in marriage to George A. Johnson at the Chester United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking for her family, canning, entertaining friends, going to garage sales, antiquing and dancing.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother Darryl Armstrong, and a nephew William J. Armstrong.
She is survived by her husband George A. of Chester, I A, children Karen (Mike) Wendel of Chester, IA, Reed (Les) Johnson of Chester, IA and Jane (Rick) Ullom of Chester, IA; six grandchildren - Ben, Jill, Holly, and Dana Johnson and Jason and Kyle Ullom. Also one sister Nolla Deguch of Mesa, AZ with nieces and nephews and friends.Transcriber’s Note: The headline showed age of 70 and the obituary shows 79 which agrees with the dates of birth and death.
