Services held for Mary Halsted
Funeral services for Mary Halsted were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 11, at the United Methodist Church with interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, both in Cresco. The Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Mary, 88, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.
Mary Catherine Halsted was born December 11, 1912 in Oelwein, Fayette County, the youngest daughter of Everett and Katherine (Tobin) Bogert. Shortly after Mary’s birth, the family moved to Springfield, MA residing there until 1920, after the death of both her mother and later the death of a step mother.
The family came back to Iowa and settled in Fayette, where Mary grew to womanhood. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1932 and attended one semester of art at Upper Iowa University.
In 1936, she married George R. Halsted of Arlington at the home of her parents. The family moved to Cresco in April of 1940 where George entered the barber trade.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Twentieth Century Club, Cresco Garden Club, a charter member of the A to Z Sewing Club and a life member of the Hospital Auxiliary. As the girls were growing up, she worked with the Camp Fire Girls Club program.
She is survived by two daughters: Leatrice Corcoran of Austin, MN and Mary Ellen Bogert of Lynchburg, VA; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great- grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband George on April 16, 1990; one great-granddaughter; her parents; one brother: Everett Bogert; and three sisters: Bea Aulwes, Harriet Sterk and Edna Frommelt.
