Funeral services for John Foley of Harpers Ferry were held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 29 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waterloo. The Rev. George Karnik officiated. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
John, 68, died Friday, March 23, 2001 suddenly at his home in Harpers Ferry.
John Joseph Foley was born February 18, 1933 in Cresco, the son of Michael, Sr. and Frances (Opat) Foley. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco and graduated from Cresco Notre Dame Catholic High School in 1950.
On June 13, 1955 he married Lorraine Kalishek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They were later divorced. John worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo for 34 years. He owned the Buccaneer Lounge in Hudson from 1982-1986. Since 1989 he has lived in Harpers Ferry where he worked at The Spillway from 1991-2000. He also worked as a farm hand for Dick Sadler.
John was a member of St. Ann’s/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry and St. John’s Catholic church in Waterloo. He was also a member of Local P46 Butchers Workman’s Union in Waterloo. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He also liked to polka and listen to country music.
Survivors include one daughter: Tammy Foley of Lincoln, NE; two sons: Rick and Kevin, both of Waterloo; three grandchildren; one brother: Mike, Jr. of Cresco; and one sister: Kathleen Friedrich of Waterloo.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Edmund and William; and an infant brother and sister.
