A Pioneer Dead.
We learn that Oliver Arnold is dead. He become a resident of this county in May 1854, locating on the farm now owned and oocupied by his son Henry. He was lost on the prairie with two others, a brother of A. J. Eddy and the son of James Carpenter both of whom perished that terrible December night, Mr. Arnold losing his toes and most of his fingers. The party left New Oregon nearly at dark for home in the town of Albion the terrible storm coming on when they ware just north of the present residence of W. C. Nichols, where they turned their team loose from the sleigh. A few years ago he went to Strouseton S. D. to reside with a son or daughter there and where he died. He was 92 years of age the 5th of May, 1898. His native place was Vermont but he came to Iowa from the state of New York. He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence and had several times been the choice of the democratic party, representing it upon Its county ticket.
