William Henry Rice,
Was born in Martinsburg, New York, September 15, 1849, and died in Orleans, Winneshiek County, Iowa, June 11, 1898 aged 48 years 8 months and 20 days. In 1857 when but 8 years of age his parents moved to Iowa, since which time the deceased has been most of the time a resident of Iowa and in our immediate vicinity. He was the only child of Almon Rice, who in 1857 purchased the farm in Orleans where deceased died and had resided most of his years. In 1886 he was united in marriage with Mrs. Harriet R. Butler who survives him. No children were born to them. After his marriage he and his wife removed to Carbondale, Kansas, where they resided for a time, he following the business of Jeweller and confectioner. In 1890 they returned to Iowa locating in the home of his boyhood on the Orleans farm from whence he passed away. Deceased had been in failing health from kidney troubles for a number of years, culminating in his untimely death. He had been a member of the Masonic order for about twenty six years and had been honored with responsible positions in Cresco lodge of which he was a member, the lodge taking charge of the funeral and attending in a body. The funeral was from the home and the esteem in which deceased was held by his neighbors and friends, was shown by their attendance over sixty teams being at the home and upwards of forty in the procession to Oak Lawn, where his remains repose. Deceased felt that he was prepared to go and died in hopes of a glorious immortality with his blessed redeemer. He was a true man a good citizen, a kind friend and obliging neighbor. He was the hope and pride of his father, who, in his declining years is left alone in the world, and who is sensibly affected by his irreparable loss. The PLAIN DEALER sympathises in the sorrow of the aged father and lonely widow of deceased.
